The Reproductive Health Access Project seeks to ensure that women and teens at every socioeconomic level can readily obtain birth control and abortion from their own primary care clinician. Through training, advocacy and mentoring programs, RHAP helps family physicians and other clinicians make birth control and abortion a part of routine medical care.
The Reproductive Health Access Project:
- Fights punitive medical traditions
Many aspects of standard medical practice impede women’s ability to obtain birth control. To improve women’s access to effective birth control, we help primary care clinicians provide patient-centered contraceptive care.
- Addresses the abortion provider shortage
In the United States, 87% of counties have no abortion provider. Family physicians, most of whom work in medically underserved urban and rural communities, can expand women’s access to quality abortion care.
- Develops the next generation of physician activists and leaders
We work with medical students and residents on research projects, clinical presentations, and advocacy projects. Through this collaboration, our trainees gain leadership skills and are prepared to advocate for better reproductive health education, training, and policies.
- Provides contraception and abortion in a safe, familiar setting
Women need high-quality, comprehensive contraceptive care from their family doctors. More than one-third of all women in the United States have an abortion at some point in their lives. Many would prefer to have an abortion with the doctor they know and trust, in a supportive, private, accessible and nonjudgmental atmosphere.
- Builds healthier families
Clinicians who treat entire families recognize the importance of preparing for parenthood. By allowing women to decide whether and when to have children, comprehensive reproductive health services enable all family members to reach their full potential.
Only when women at all socioeconomic levels have access to birth control and abortion services in secure setting will they truly have the right to choose.
