1. Background / Overview
Goal:
The fellow is aware of the historical, societal, legal and governmental factors that influence the provision of reproductive healthcare
Objectives:
- Describes the incidence of abortion in the United States and worldwide
- Describes the legal restrictions to abortion in the United States
- Describes the impact of abortion training on abortion access
- Describes the public health implications of access to legal abortion

2. Counseling
Goal:
The fellow provides patient-centered counseling for all aspects of reproductive health care
Objectives:
- Provides evidence-based, patient-centered counseling on contraceptive choices
- Provides non-directive counseling for options for unintended pregnancy
- Counsels women appropriately about the choices for pregnancy termination
- Knows elements of and obtains informed consent for all procedures
- Recognizes complexity of ethical issues surrounding the provision of reproductive health care

3. Contraception
Goal:
The fellow provides evidence-based, patient-centered contraceptive care
Objectives:
- Counsels patients appropriately about risks and benefits of available contraceptive methods
- Describes the efficacy, mechanism of action, and contraindications of available contraceptive methods
- Describes non-contraceptive benefits of available contraceptive methods
- Describes available methods of emergency contraception and counsels patients in their appropriate use
- Informs patients of new trends in contraception, including QuickStart and extended-use regimens
- Demonstrates proficiency in insertion of intrauterine devices
- Demonstrates proficiency in diaphragm fitting
- Demonstrates proficiency in inserting contraceptive implants

4. Documenting Pregnancy and Gestational Age
Goal:
The fellow accurately documents intrauterine pregnancy and determines gestational age
Objectives:
- Elicits and documents relevant historical findings
- Uses appropriate physical exam to estimate gestational age
- Knows how to interpret urine and serum pregnancy tests
- Accurately confirms intrauterine pregnancy and gestational age using sonography
- Knows indications for use of sonography in medication and surgical abortion

5. Abortion
Goal:
The fellow demonstrates proficiency in the provision early abortion care
Objectives:
- Describes the contraindications to medication and surgical abortion
- Counsels women through the process of medication abortion
- Performs all steps of manual vacuum aspiration proficiently
- Accurately assesses for completeness of medication and surgical abortion
- Describes how to recognize and manage complications of medication and surgical abortion

- Describes signs and symptoms of abnormal pregnancies
- Describes use of laboratory testing in diagnosis of abnormal pregnancies
- Identifies ultrasound characteristics of ectopic pregnancy
- Identifies ultrasound characteristics of early pregnancy failure
- Describes management options for early pregnancy failure
- Describes management options for suspected ectopic pregnancy

7. Training / Teaching
Goal:
The fellow demonstrates the ability to effectively train clinicians in the provision of primary care and abortion care
Objectives:
- Leads didactic sessions on family medicine and reproductive health topics
- Presents and helps residents to present at academic meetings
- Precepts residents and medical students during family medicine continuity clinics
- Effectively trains residents and other trainees in procedural care, including IUD insertion, manual vacuum aspiration and the use of 1st trimester ultrasound
- Teaches all aspects of the provision of medication abortion

8. Advocacy
Goal:
The fellow collaborates with advocacy, educational and community organizations to promote access to reproductive health care in primary care settings
Objectives:
- Presents at academic meetings on reproductive health topics
- Facilitates values clarification workshops for organizational groups
- Leads community workshops for medication abortion training
- Leads trainings on reproductive health topics for community groups
- Works with NYU medical students to organize the free reproductive health clinic
- Works with medical student groups to promote training in reproductive healthcare in the primary care setting
