Miscarriage Care Initiative

*We are not accepting applications at this time – please see below for more details.*

The Miscarriage Care Initiative is an effort by the Reproductive Health Access Project (RHAP) to expand access to evidence-based, patient-centered miscarriage care in primary care settings. Our vision is to support family physicians and clinic administrators to integrate all three forms of miscarriage management—expectant, medication, and manual vacuum aspiration (MVA) management—into their clinical practice.

Organizations that participate in the Miscarriage Care Initiative receive intensive support from RHAP to integrate and expand miscarriage treatment into a primary care practice site. Each applicant organization identifies a “Clinical Champion,” who is the primary point of contact and lead program implementation at the practice site.

Technical Assistance and Support

The Miscarriage Care Initiative participants receive the following support:

  • Technical support to integrate comprehensive miscarriage care into the clinical practice site. This includes help developing/revising policies and procedures, ensuring appropriate coding and billing, development of electronic health records templates, support providing values clarification workshops with staff (if needed), etc.
  • Support developing a project team that includes residents, nurses, administrators, support staff, etc.
  • Start-up funds for equipment and supplies, including an ultrasound probe and/or machine if needed.
  • Refresher training for the Clinical Champion in ultrasonography, if needed.
  • Support for the Clinical Champion to attend a national conference where they will meet with the Miscarriage Care Initiative RHAP team to discuss the project rollout and implementation.
  • Support to attend a local or regional primary care conference of the Clinical Champion’s choice. The organization will be encouraged to submit an abstract to present on miscarriage care.
  • Support developing a comprehensive sustainability plan.

The project period typically ranges from 12 to 18 months, though this may be shorter or longer depending on the individual needs of the practice site and the Clinical Champion.

Clinic and Program Site Recruitment Criteria

All project sites must be primary care practice settings. RHAP prioritizes applicant organizations that are diverse, both in terms of practice setting (community health centers, private practices, academic practices, etc.) and geographic location (regionally and urban vs. rural). Priority is given to applicant organizations working with medically underserved populations, are federally qualified health centers, and/or have a family medicine residency program.

Clinical Champion Recruitment Criteria

Each organization must identify a Clinical Champion who is the primary point of contact for this project. The Clinical Champion should be a board certified or board eligible family physician in the United States. The Clinical Champion, or another project leader, should be trained to competency in offering manual vacuum aspiration (MVA).
