RHAP Celebrates AAPI Heritage Month

This May, RHAP recognizes and celebrates Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month.

Reproductive health and justice strongly impacts AAPI individuals, particularly the high population of immigrants and women without access to health care. AAPI people face barriers to reproductive care including language barriers, being in jobs that are frequently uninsured, and racial profiling. The criminalization of abortion and pregnancy creates disproportionate risks to AAPI people’s health and safety, especially the nearly two-thirds of Asian Americans and one-fifth of Pacific Islanders who are born outside of the United States. We want to recognize, empower, and uplift organizations like the National Asian Pacific Women’s Forum working to build political, social, and economic power for AAPI women and girls, particularly protecting abortion and supporting the majority of AAPI women who support abortion access.

In recent years, AAPI communities have seen a sharp increase in hate crimes and identity -based violence towards individuals. RHAP strongly condemns this violence and stands in solidarity with our AAPI neighbors who are fighting for their communities, rights, and livelihoods (read our previous statement here). In order to achieve the pillars of reproductive justice, it is crucial to ensure the health and safety of all people and ensure their choice to have children, not have children, and raise children in safe and healthy environments.

This May, support AAPI communities by donating to AAPI-led organizations, educating yourself on the unique challenges they face, and committing to an inclusive and safe society for everyone. Some of the organizations working to provide information and build power for AAPI communities are:
